Because of the attitude of the Mormon people toward the Indians, inspired by the Book of Mormon and Church doctrine, a friendly bond existed between the Pioneers and the Red Men. Aunt Jane Bradley employed and paid them for work in and around her home, and Uncle Zeph became a sort of patron saint to all of them.
A little Indian boy who had been left an orphan, they adopted and raised as their own. Out of him they made a Latter Day Saint and a patriotic citizen. He enlisted for military service and went overseas in the armies of Uncle Sam during the First World War, where he was killed in action. No child of their own was ever more sincerely mourned.
